THE LAB is an ensemble based training ground in the arts using theatre, dance, music and creative writing as tools to explore your unique point of view as an artist. We’ll explore theme-based art creation that promises to be physical, dynamic and challenging with a strong focus on play! The ensemble will be led by Creatively Independent’s two Artistic Directors, Chris Beaulieu and Jess Pillmore.
Performance skills will be taught and applied to ensemble creation based on an abstract theme and/or theatrical text. Performance Skills: Physical Comedy, Stage Combat, Intention and Contact Improvisation.

LAB TEACHER BIOS
Jess Pillmore, Co-Artistic Director of Creatively Independent, tours internationally as a director,
teacher & choreographer (dance & stage combat). Currently, she is a teaching artist for the
International Schools Theatre Association (ISTA), which is responsible for the IB Theatre
curriculum. While choreographing Off-Broadway, Jess worked & trained with Tony award
winning artists such as Ann Reinking, Susan Schulman & Kathleen Marshall to name a few. In
Chicago, Jess was director/choreographer for the Neo-Futurist's first musical "City Girl!", winning
Best Musical at the Minneapolis Fringe Fest. In stage combat, Jess received the 1999 Nat'l Best
Female Actor/Combatant & 2000 Founder's Award in Unarmed by the SAFD. Jess is currently
getting her MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts at Goddard College.
Christopher Beaulieu, Co-Artistic Director of Creatively Independent, tours internationally
teaching, directing and performing. He has worked extensively with Shakespeare & Co.,
Kennedy Center American College Th. Fest. (SE Region), International Schools Theatre
Association, Williamstown Theatre Festival's Greylock Project, Circus Smirkus and Dell' Arte,
where he also received his Physical Theatre degree. In FL, his playwriting residency for Living
Inside/Art in the Jail was recognized by the N.E.A. At Montreal's Segal Center, he directed the
premiere of the dark comedy "The Diminticato Family Circus". In 2009, Chris was honored with
the Paddy Crean Award by the Society of American Fight Directors where he is also recognized
with honors as an Adv. Actor/Combatant in 8 weapons.

Q: Interdisciplinary arts? Ensemble devised?
A: Interdisciplinary arts - uses many disciplines in order to discover new approaches towards art making. Ensemble
devised – the students will direct the work as a group with their needs, impulses and questions. The teachers
are there to challenge, advise and offer new opportunities or skills to the ensemble as they explore.
